Cognitive Abilities Tests

The Cognitive Abilities Tests are a range of assessments that will give invaluable information to a parent/guardian about their child's strngth in verbal fluency, numerical ability, spatial reasoning and abstract reasoning. The assessments will enable parents/guardians, teachers and students to see what subjects may suit an individual's skill set.

In 3rd Year, students do a follow-up test and this should consolidate findings and enable students to make informed decisions around subject choice, levels and the correct senior cycle programme to follow. These results will also indicate how individual students learn allowing us to intervene effectively where neccessary and to plan lessons accordingly.

The results of these tests are not used to stream classes. Carrick-on-Shannon Community School advocates a mixed-ability classroom approach for the benifit of all our students.
